Onion is the king of the kitchen and tomato is the queen. Do you all agree for this statement. But i think its true. As now the vegetables are very costly in the market except onion. Poor onion.. Till now i used onions just as a part of the recipe but now i thought of making a masala curry with the onions itself.. Even this curry was well received and nobody could recognise that it was onion curry.. :)

Ingredients :

Small onions 8 – 10

Big onion – 1

Coconut powder -  3 tbsp

Cumin powder – 1/4 tsp

Fenugreek/methi powder – 1/4 tsp

Til powder – 1 tbsp

Groundnut powder – 2 tbsp

Ginger garlic paste – 1 tsp

Tamarind pulp – 1/4 cup

Curry leaves – 2 sprigs

Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp

Red chillie powder – 1 tsp

Salt – as required

Oil – 3 tbsp

Peel off the skin of big onion and boil it in water for five minutes. After its cool grind it into fine paste. Take thick tamarind extract in a bowl and add coconut, cumin, methi, til, groundnut powders and mix well to remove the lumps. Now add turmeric, red chillie powders , ginger garlic paste and salt and mix well. Heat oil in a flat pan and add peeled small onions (you can use sambhar onions also) and curry leaves . Let the onions become soft and add the masala paste to it. Mix and cook on medium heat till the oil floats on top. This will be done in not more than ten minutes. This masala curry can be prepared quickly and goes best with Rotis , naan , pulao and biryani ..
